Is Your Google Business Profile Costing You Customers in Wollondilly? Here’s How to Check in 5 Minutes

Most small businesses know they should be on Google.

Far fewer realise that being on Google and being found on Google are two very different things.

Over the past few weeks, I audited 50 local businesses across Wollondilly — from trades to beauty to service providers.

Almost every single one had a Google listing.

The problem wasn’t presence.

It was performance.

What I found in the audit

Across the 50 businesses reviewed, the same issues kept showing up.

❌ Unclaimed profiles — and duplicates

Businesses had profiles they hadn’t claimed or verified. Some had multiple listings floating around — all showing different or incomplete information. Google can generate listings automatically from public data, which means your business might already exist online… without you having any control over it.

Missing or incomplete information

Opening hours, service areas, descriptions, contact details — all commonly missing. If your hours aren’t listed, customers don’t call to check. They move on. If your description is empty, Google has very little context to decide when to show your business.

NAP inconsistencies (Name, Address, Phone)

Several businesses had small variations across platforms — a slightly different name on Facebook, a different phone format on their website. These small inconsistencies can quietly impact your local SEO performance, because Google cross-checks this information to verify legitimacy.

No reviews — or no replies

Some businesses had no reviews at all. Others had positive reviews sitting there… unanswered. Responding to reviews isn’t just good manners — it signals to Google that your business is active and engaged, which can influence visibility.

Why this matters more than most people think

When someone searches:

  • “electrician Picton”

  • “lash tech Tahmoor”

  • “builder Wollondilly”

…the first thing they see isn’t your website.

It’s your Google Business Profile (GBP).

It shows up in the map pack at the top of search results — before websites, before social media, before anything else.

In most cases, customers don’t scroll past this section. They pick one of the top listings and move on.

That means your Google listing is often your first impression.

And if that listing is:

  • incomplete

  • outdated

  • or inconsistent

…it’s already working against you.

The good news?

Most of these issues are quick to fix once you know what to look for.

How to check your own listing — the 5-minute audit

Search your business name on Google and click into your listing. Then run through this checklist:

✅ Is your profile claimed and verified?

If you see a “Claim this business” button, you don’t own your listing yet.

✅ Is your business name consistent?

Check it matches exactly across your website, Facebook, and Google.

✅ Are your contact details correct?

Phone number, website link, and service area should all be accurate.

✅ Are your hours listed and up to date?

Including public holidays and seasonal changes.

✅ Do you have a business description?

Clearly explain what you do, who you serve, and where you operate.

✅ Do you have photos?

Even a few real images builds trust immediately.

✅ When did you last post an update?

Regular posts signal to Google that your business is active.

Do you have reviews — and have you responded?

Replying to reviews helps build trust and visibility.

The difference between an average listing and a strong one isn’t technical —

it’s just knowing what matters.

If you want a step-by-step version of this (with screenshots and exactly what to write), I’ve put together a free Small Business Guide to Google Business Profiles.

When it makes sense to get help

If you worked through that checklist and thought “this needs more than a quick tidy” — you’re not alone.

Most business owners I speak to either:

  • haven’t set their profile up properly

  • created it once and left it, or

  • aren’t sure what actually improves visibility

That’s where I come in.

At Digital Manifest, I offer:

  • Google Business Profile setup

  • Detailed audit with action plan

  • Full optimisation (done for you)

I also include GBP establishment (or review) in my Growth Website package — because your website and your Google listing should be working together, not separately.

TL;DR

  • Most small businesses have a Google Business Profile—but many aren’t using it properly

  • Common issues include unclaimed listings, missing info, inconsistent details, and no review activity

  • These problems can quietly reduce how often your business shows up (and gets chosen) on Google

  • Your GBP is often the first thing potential customers see—before your website or socials

  • The good news: most issues can be identified and fixed in under 5 minutes

  • A simple audit can quickly highlight what’s holding your listing back

  • If it needs more than a quick tidy-up, proper setup and optimisation can significantly improve visibility and enquiries
