Small business owner deep in thought, representing the decision-making process behind choosing what Wix Studio is and how it fits their website goals

A not-so-technical intro for small biz owners and creatives who want websites that work.

So, What Are We Talking About?

Wix Studio is everywhere right now — but what is Wix Studio? If you’re a small business owner trying to choose the right website platform, you’ve probably heard the name. Let's break it down...

Wix Studio is the newer, more powerful cousin of the original Wix platform. Think: more creative freedom, better responsiveness, smoother workflows — all without having to learn how to code. Built for designers (like me), but still easy enough for non-tech folks to manage once the site is live.

If Wix is the cute starter apartment, Wix Studio is the custom-designed dream home.

A Quick History: Wix vs Wix Studio

Wix (the OG) has been around since 2006. It became popular due to its drag-and-drop interface and beginner-friendly setup, making it perfect for solopreneurs building their first website at 2am in their pyjamas.

But over time, people wanted more:

  • Cleaner mobile responsiveness

  • Advanced animations

  • Smoother editor experience

  • More design flexibility

That's where Wix Studio comes in. It was built with designers in mind, meaning it lets us create custom, professional websites without compromising on looks, performance, or mobile behaviour.

Okay, Cool, But What Makes Wix Studio Different?

Let's hit the high points — in plain English.

  1. Responsive Design That Actually Works

Wix Studio makes it easy to build a single website that works seamlessly across desktops, tablets, and phones — no weird cropping or overlapping text. It uses breakpoints (basically, screen size rules) to ensure your content always looks good.

  1. Advanced Layout Tools

Think grids, stacks, repeaters, and innovative alignment tools. These let us create beautiful layouts without wrestling with code. So yes, your site can look designer-level polished — even if you've never touched HTML in your life.

  1. Built-in Animation + Interaction Features

Want your text to fade in? Or a section to scroll like butter? It's all baked into Wix Studio. Subtle motion can take your site from "meh" to "wow" — without a plugin in sight.

  1. Collaborative Features

Wix Studio was designed for teams, and even if you're a team of one, that means easier client handoffs, commenting tools, and improved version control when collaborating with a designer.

  1. Cleaner Backend, Better SEO Tools

This part's for the nerds (or just the SEO-conscious among us): Wix Studio has improved structure, faster load times, and access to all the metadata and settings you need to rank on Google.

When Wix Studio Shines

Here's where Wix Studio is a perfect fit:

  • You want a custom, modern design without breaking the bank

  • You're not tech-savvy but want to be able to edit your site easily

  • You work with a designer (like me!) who can set everything up

  • Your business needs a portfolio, service list, or simple booking setup

  • You want a site that loads fast, works on all devices, and feels like you

For most small businesses, coaches, creatives, freelancers, and service-based brands, Wix Studio is a total win.

And Because We're Honest Around Here… The Cons

Let's keep it real. No platform is perfect, and Wix Studio has a few quirks:

  1. Not ideal for complex eCommerce

If you've got a massive online store with numerous products and custom checkout needs, platforms like Shopify might be a better fit.

  1. You can DIY, but it's not as plug-and-play as classic Wix

Wix Studio was built for designers, which means it's easier to customise, but there's a learning curve if you're flying solo.

  1. Some advanced features still need integrations

While the core platform is strong, features such as advanced booking, memberships, or automation may require some additional setup.

But for the majority of small business sites? These are non-issues.

So… Should You Use It?

Here's the magic question — and the honest answer:

💡 If you want a professional-looking site that's easy to maintain and doesn't feel like a cookie-cutter template, then yes. Wix Studio is a brilliant option.

It lets you (or your designer) build something that feels yours, not just "good enough."

If you love creative control, care about mobile experience, and want something that grows with your business, it's worth considering.

Real Talk: Why I Use It

As a web designer, I've tested numerous platforms — including Squarespace, Webflow, WordPress, Snapps and more.

Wix Studio hits that sweet spot:

  • Flexible for me

  • Friendly for you

  • Affordable for small biz budgets

It gives me the tools to build creative, custom sites — but it also empowers my clients to make minor updates, blog posts, and tweaks without panic-Googling "how to change a button in Wix."

That's a win in my books.

TL;DR

  • Wix Studio is the upgraded version of classic Wix

  • It offers more creative control, better responsiveness, and smoother workflows

  • Ideal for small biz owners who want polished websites with less tech stress

  • Still easy to use — with or without a designer

Coming up next:

We'll compare it to WordPress, Squarespace, and Webflow, so you can see the pros and cons for yourself (no tech jargon, I promise).
