Small business owner comparing Wix Studio vs WordPress and other website builders

A plain-English showdown for small biz owners, creatives, and curious minds.

In this post, we’re cutting through the tech-speak and comparing Wix Studio vs WordPress and a few other big names side by side so you can make the right choice for your business.

👑 Meet the Platforms

🟦 Wix Studio

It's a next-gen version of classic Wix. Built for designers, friendly for non-techies, and flexible without being overwhelming.

🟩 WordPress

The OG. Extremely customisable, open-source, and powering a significant portion of the internet. But be ready to get your hands (or wallet) dirty.

⚫ Squarespace

All-in-one, design-first platform. Beautiful templates, polished user experience, and a favourite for creatives and lifestyle brands.

🟪 Webflow

Web designer heaven. Visual coding, ultra-precise control, and a plethora of animation tools. But with a steeper learning curve.

💬 Let’s Break It Down

✅ Wix Studio Wins If…

  • You want a custom site that’s easy to hand over or self-manage

  • You’re working with a designer (🙋‍♀️) but want to make small edits later

  • You love sleek design but hate plugins, updates, and back-end drama

🤔 WordPress Wins If…

  • You need serious custom functionality (like forums, memberships, or big eCommerce setups)

  • You’re cool with regular maintenance (or having a developer on call)

  • You love plugins and total control — even if it means more effort

🎨 Squarespace Wins If…

  • You want a beautiful, minimalist site — fast

  • You don’t need much customisation or complex features

  • You prefer a "what you see is what you get" experience

🔧 Webflow Wins If…

  • You (or your designer) want total design control and fine-tuned animation

  • You’re building a design portfolio or a highly interactive site

  • You’re not afraid of a learning curve

🧠 Real Talk: Which One Should You Use?

If you’re a small business owner, coach, creative, freelancer, or service-based brand, Wix Studio is probably your sweet spot.

It gives you more freedom than Squarespace, less maintenance than WordPress, and an easier on-ramp than Webflow.

Plus:

  • You’ll get a slick, responsive, professional site

  • You can actually update it without breaking something

  • You won’t need to sell your soul to plugins or developers

🗣️ Why I Like Wix Studio

As a web designer, I’ve built sites on all four platforms. Each one has its strengths, but Wix Studio strikes the best balance for my clients:

  • It’s flexible for me to design with

  • It’s manageable for you to update

  • It looks high-end without high stress

If I think something else would better suit your project, I’ll let you know. But for most of my clients? Wix Studio nails the brief.

TL;DR

  • Wix Studio is ideal for custom, designer-grade websites that still feel DIY-manageable

  • WordPress is powerful, but it requires more upkeep and tech skills

  • Squarespace is sleek and simple but can be limiting

  • Webflow is ultra-flexible but comes with a learning curve

  • Your choice depends on your needs, your time, and your tolerance for tech
